Umpqua Hot Springs Trail #1444 The 0.3-mile trail is a steep climb to a "tub" 3 feet by 5 feet by 2.5 feet deep that is hewn out of the travertine deposits surrounding the springs. The hot springs, trail and trailhead is Day-Use Only - open from sunrise to sunset. Use is very high and nudity is common at this popular site. The springs, at a temperature of 108 degrees, is located on a bare rock face 150 feet above the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River. Water seeps through an active fault, resulting in temperatures of 100 to 115 degrees. From the tub, there is a view of Surprise Falls across the river. The tub is sheltered by an open-air roof structure. Although there isn't a fee to hike the trail, there is a day-use fee at the trailhead. At a Glance Current Conditions: 12/06/2016: Gate on Forest Road 3401 to Hot Springs is now closed. Prepare to hike approx. 1.5 miles in deep snow to the trailhead. Trail is under heavy snow and is not recommended for travel. General Information Directions: From Umpqua Hot Springs Trailhead, cross the foot bridge over the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River to the trail. Turn right, proceed 0.1 mile to a junction. Turn to the right and start to climb a steep narrow trail for 0.2 mile. There is another fork, turn to the right and start to climb a steep narrow trail for 0.2 mile. There is another fork, turn uphill to the left. The hot springs are under a covered shelter. Umpqua National Forest Recreation Map reference number is J-5.
