I have done a lot of night - hikes and found that even though my eyes get adjusted to the dark so that I can see well enough without using a light it is still very easy to lose the pad so to speak and trying to navigate along a course. Share story of cross camp and the bees and the story goes hiking to 118 water tower and how the path leads clear ahead of me with the lights behind me and even with that somehow with a straight and narrow path it was easy to step off and be on another side path Coming back down the mountain toward the lights is more difficult because in the darkness with the lights shining in your eyes it makes it impossible to see so you put your hand up above your eyes to shield the horizon which then leads you only enough sight to see about 10 feet in front of you as you walk so you have to be sure of the path that you are taking so that you it's easy to stay on the path it is harder to know where that path will end up because you can't see so far into the future
